Monfiorito of Pula pledges loyalty to the Aquileian Patriarch Gregory of Montelongo, promising to uphold the rights and honor of his Church, to reimburse all goods received from the patriarch and his people, to immediately and unconditionally withdraw from Motovun, and to appoint suitable sureties for the fulfillment of these commitments in form of sworn guarantors. This oath is subsequently reaffirmed in Muggia as Monfiorito, along with the representatives of the Commune of Pula, provides thirty-one persons as his sworn guarantors.

Editor's Notes

The documents reveal a swift retaliation of Patriarch Gregory, at this time still backed by the pro-imperial regional nobility and their champion, Count Albert I of Gorizia. What exactly Monfiorito of Pula did in Motovun cannot be ascertained due to the lack of sources. According to De Vergottini (cited above), he forced his way into becoming the community’s podestà. Whatever happened in Motovun, it was not to the patriarch’s liking.

Monfiorito was therefore forced to retreat unconditionally, pledge allegiance to the patriarch and the Church of Aquileia, and to provide boni homines as his guarantors. Monfiorito did just that, as attested by the hereby edited documents, producing no less than thirty-one persons as his guarantors.

The Treaty of Savičenta also shows that House Pula (the future House of Castropola) already possessed ample jurisdictions in Savičenta, including the right to appoint gastalds – their representatives tasked with local government. According to much later documents, these jurisdictions were held from the bishops of Poreč, but at least a part of them had to stem from the patriarchs of Aquileia. In any case, the old argument that Patriarch Wolfger invested House Pula with the County of Pula, Šišan, Savičenta, Bale, Rovinj and Turnina, (first put forward by Karl Czornig, Das Land Görz und Gradisca: Mit Einschluss von Aquileja (Vienna 1873), p. 281, fn. 3) must be abandoned as it is not backed by primary sources.
