King Rudolf I issues a privilege to Boniface, the bishop of Poreč, confirming the earlier privilege issued to the Bishopric of Poreč by Otto II in 983, declaring all the previous alienations of the bishopric’s properties invalid, and confirming and re-granting the secular jurisdiction over Vrsar to the same bishopric.

Editor's Notes

The present charter was procured by Bishop Boniface of Poreč who was locked in a conflict with both Venice (who ruled over Poreč by way of the commune’s 1267 voluntary subjection to Commune Veneciarum) and Raymond della Torre, the incumbent patriarch of Aquileia, who pressed claims over Poreč by way of his title of Istrian margrave, donated to his Church by King Otto IV in 1209 (see doc. 1209_W5).

Bishop Boniface sought to reaffirm his bishopric’s temporal jurisdictions over a large jurisdictional area of his diocese based on old imperial privileges that he discovered as he took over the reins of the Church of Poreč. The main weapon to achieve this goal was the ancient charter issued by Otto II in 983 to the Bishopric of Poreč (doc. 983_OP), mentioning the Church’s temporal jurisdiction over a number of towns, villages, and forts in the Diocese of Poreč. During Boniface’s time, however, all of these possessions were divided between Venice, the counts of Gorizia (advocates of both Aquileian patriarchs as well as the bishops of Poreč), and their many retainers. The only temporal possession that Boniface’s Bishopric managed to hold on to was Vrsar, but it was also the only locality not explicitly mentioned in Otto II’s charter. Thus, Boniface made sure that King Rudolf I explicitly mentioned this possession.

In any case, Rudolf’s privilege did not achieve its intended goal for Bishop Boniface, and the temporal jurisdiction mentioned in it, with the sole exception of Vrsar, remained outside of the Church’s temporal authority.
