Weichard II of Petrapilosa’s pledge of fealty to Patriarch Raymond della Torre – edited here as doc. 1297_WP.
This War of Belgrado, that pitted the Gorizians and their ministerials against the Aquileian Patriarch Raymond della Torre, has been erroneously dated to 1292 by many scholars. This error stems from the fact that the “chronicle” of Odorico of Pordenone was known primarily by way of Giuseppe Bianchi’s 19th-century copy, which had the original date “1292” for this very entry. However, as Dalla Pria (cited above) has shown, who based his critical edition on the original 14th-century manuscript, the entry was made under the year 1297, written in a curious combination of Roman and Arabic numerals as “MCC97”. This dating fits all the other documentation regarding this conflict, as it was in October of 1297 that Weichard II of Petrapilosa, who fought on the Gorizian side, asked forgiveness from the patriarch for all the damage he inflicted during this war (see doc. 1297_WP).
As demonstrated by this Weichard’s “apology”, the War of Belgrado did not last long, as the parties were already negotiating amicably in the Fall of the same year, Patriarch Raymond solemnly knighting Albert’s son and heir, Count Henry II of Gorizia, on December 1, 1297, as reported by the chronicler Julian (Anno Domini MCCXCVII, prima die decembris, reverendus pater dominus Raymundus Aquilegensis patriarcha fecit milites dominum Henricum filium domini Albretti comitis Goricie cum quibusdam suis Theotonicis et etiam dominum Thomasium de Cucanea, dominum Henricum de Budrio et dominum Constantinum de Utino in loco qui dicitur Pradatinis prope villam Paderni supra Utinum – ed. Giovanni Tambara, RIS, ser. 2, vol. 29/14 (Città di Castello 1905), p. 28). The peace would not last long. Already in the fall of 1298, Henry II of Gorizia reignited the war against Patriarch Raymond (see Brunettin 2004, cited above).
