Manfred Cagapisto and Jacob Porrezionis, the official representatives of Aquileian Patriarch Raymond della Torre, conclude a new treaty with Doge Lorenzo Tiepolo and the Commune of Venice, reestablishing the relations as defined in a previous treaty from 1254 signed between Patriarch Gregory of Montelongo and Doge Ranieri Zeno; the representatives of the patriarch also promise to have the count of Gorizia sign the treaty once he settles his differences with the incumbent patriarch, to reimburse to the Venetians all the damages that they had suffered during the period in which the 1254 treaty had not been respected by the patriarchs, and to make sure that all the roads remain free and open to Venetian merchants.

Editor's Notes

The pact between Venice and Patriarch Raymond is essentially a confirmation of the old pact signed between Venice and Raymond’s predecessor, Patriarch Gregory of Montelongo in 1254 (edited here as doc. 1254_VG).

Raymond della Torre ceremoniously entered Friuli in August of 1274 and he was greeted with two vexing problems: the dispute with the counts of Gorizia over the jurisdiction of Cormons and the disputes with Venice regarding the jurisdiction of the four Istrian communes that subjected themselves to the Venetian Commune between 1267 and 1271 (Poreč, Umag, Novigrad and Sveti Lovreč). Raymond sought to pacify both conflicts and in February of 1285 he opened negotiations with both Count Albert I of Gorizia and with Venice. The negotiations with the Gorizian ended with a settlement of 1275, leaving the issue of Cormons to the arbitrational sentence of the jury of elected peers (doc. 1275_GR); the negotiations with Venice resulted with the hereby edited treaty.

  • The pact clearly favored the Venetians. Not only was the old 1254 treaty confirmed, which in itself heavily favored Venice, but two new articles were introduced that also played into Venetian favor: all the newly imposed fees were to be abolished and the Venetians forced to pay those were to be compensated by the patriarch;
  • all the roads and highways throughout the ecclesiastical principality of the patriarchs of Aquileia were now to be freely open to the Venetian merchants and the patriarch was to compensate for the damages suffered during the period when the roads had been blocked.

Venice promised to uphold the 1254 treaty and to abrogate the newly imposed fees, but only some of them – those included in the instrumentum protestationis would remain (but since that document cannot be found, it cannot be known which fees were to remain).

Finally, both the patriarch and the count of Gorizia were required to formally swear to uphold the pact. While Count Albert I did not do such a thing, at least not before 1279/1280 when he had to bend the knee in front of the doge after losing the war against Venice (the text of the treaty does not survive; cf. Andrea Dandolo, Chronica per extensum descripta, ed. Ester Pastorello, RIS, ser. 2, 12/1 (Bologna 1958), p. 326); Patriarch Raymond solemnly confirmed the pact in 1277 (edited here as doc. 1277_PR).
