Editor's Notes

This is the first surviving charter that Wolfger issued as the patriarch of Aquileia.

According to Härtel (cited above), Wolfger did not journey to Venice at the very beginning of his reign in the Patriarchate and stayed there simply to establish amicable relations with St. Nicholas' monastery, but rather to open diplomatic negotiations with Venice and (re)negotiate a new treaty. Indeed, a treaty between Patriarch Wolfger and Venice was reached soon thereafter and officially promulgated on the 21st of December, 1206 (edited here).

Read within this context, Wolfger's confirmation charter issued to the monastery of St. Nicholas of Lido in Venice was thus a gift (in Marcel Mauss' conceptualization of the term) aimed at establishing amicable relations between the Patriarchate and the Commune of Venice.

The confirmation also shows that St. Nicholas monastery held only the mill in Buzet and not the entire town together with its dependencies as the clumsy wording of the 1133 charter would suggest (edited here). The part of the appurtenance clause (con pascuis, pratis, canpis, aratitiis, silvis, piscationibus, venationibus et cum adiacentibus cultis et incultis) does not refer to Buzet but to all the immovable property owned by the monastery.
