Opaske urednika

For the general context behind this donation, promulgated on the same day as the donation of the regalian rights over the Bishopric of Poreč to the same recipient, see the editor's comments to doc. 1081_PAP.

Both royal charters - issued on the same day to the same recipient - feature virtually identical text, the only difference being the name of the bishopric whose regalian rights are donated to the Patriarchate of Aquileia. Thus, both charters can be viewed as charter models and both can be viewed as modeled according to the charter model. The MGH editors opted to edit the donation of the regalian rights over the Bishopric of Trieste as the Vorurkunde upon which the donation of the regalian rights over the Bishopric of Poreč would be modeled. The editor of FIM series has opted for a different approach, viewing the Poreč charter as the Vorurkunde. There are two reasons behind this editorial decision: First, the Poreč charter survives in a better manuscript tradition, as a decent notarial copy from 1261, whereas the Trieste charter survives only in simple copies from the late 15th century onwards, each of the three principal ones being flawed in certain parts (hence the need for a collated edition). Second, the editor himself is a proud civis et habitator Parentii, his unrepentant local patriotism swaying him in favor of interpreting the Poreč charter as the Vorurkunde. Whether the readers agree or disagree with this editorial decision, they should be aware that the decision is essentially conjectural and largely inconsequential.
