Wolverad I, the paternal grandfather of Patriarch Ulrich II, stemmed from the comital house of Altshausen and Veringen; he was also the first progeny of this house to acquire comital rights in Treffen. According to Heinz Dopsch (“Salzburg und Aquileia,” in Il Friuli dagli Ottoni agli Hohenstaufen, cited above, pp. 514‒515, 539), Wolverad I had two male heirs, Marquard who inherited the County of Veringen, and Wolverad II, the count of Treffen. Wolverad II, however, had only one surviving male heir, Ulrich II, an ecclesiastic who eventually became the patriarch of Aquileia, thus unable to provide legitimate heirs to his house. Therefore, the comital rights over Treffen were bestowed upon the Church of Aquileia by way of a pious donation for the salvation of the donors’ souls, considerably expanding the secular jurisdictions of Ulrich II’s patriarchate in Carinthia and granting significant social and symbolic capital to the patriarch’s family.

The donated properties are concentrated in the area to the north of Villach, around Lake Ossiach, and to the northeast of Villach.

The donation would be included in Frederick I’s confirmation of the rights and possessions of the Patriarchate of Aquileia, a document that would serve as a template for many other imperial confirmations issued to the Church of Aquileia.
