The royal donation of the March of Carniola to Patriarch Sigehard and the Church of Aquileia fits the context of the earlier donation of the County of Friuli and the subsequent donation of the County of Istria to the same recipient: see the “Editor’s Comments” featured in doc. 1077_HFA for more details.
The March of Carniola and the County of Istria were taken away from the Patriarchate of Aquileia following Patriarch Henry’s, Sigehard’s successor’s, pledge of fealty to Pope Gregory VII in 1079 – both the pledge of fealty and the narrative accounts of the episode will be edited here presently.
However, in 1093 King Henry regretted the action and re-donated Carniola to Patriarch Ulrich of Eppenstein and the Church of Aquileia – the charter will be edited here presently.
