Editor's Notes

The document, in the form in which it survives, lacks invocatio and features two later interpolations: tam episcopia quam et synodochia vel ecclesias baptismales and in sacro palatio nostro in the datatio topica. The charter is otherwise considered authentic.

This is the first of the two charters that Charlemagne issued to his faithful protege on the Ides of August of 803 in Salz (present-day Bad Neustadt) by the River Saale. This first charter bestows immunities to the Church of Grado and especially singles out the territories in Istria, Romagna and Lombardy. See the edition of the second charter here.

According to Krahwinkler (2005: p. 68, cited above), Fortunatus’ stay in Salz also saw the preparation of the legal process that was scheduled to take place in the following spring – the famous Placitum of Rižana (see the edition of the document here).
