In nomine sancte et individue Trinitatis.

Anno Dominice incarnationis M XL regni domini Henrici felicissimi regis anno VI, mensis maii, die XII, indictione X.

Editor's Notes

This is an undisputable forgery, made by all accounts in Poreč in 1305 at the request of bishop Bonifacius in order to legitimize his claims over territories disputed by the commune of Sveti Lovreč. The fact that these donations are not even mentioned in two important historical sources that dealt with the jurisdictions over these territories, one in 1186 (doc. 1186_AC), the other in purportedly in 1203 (in reality a later 13th-century forgery, doc. 1203_WP), is further proof that these charters were made for the first time in 1305, or at least during the time of bishop Bonifacius. The Bishopric of Poreč became the owner of the relict monastery of Saint Michael in Lim Bay during the thirteenth century and, since the borders between the monastery's possessions were not clear, especially its border with Gradina fort (Lat./Ital. Calisedo), the bishop had this forgery drawn up, based on which two other, subsequent forgeries were made (see doc. 1040_WB, and doc. 1040_HR). All three forgeries are dated to 1040 according to anno Domini, 1042 according to indiction and 1044 according to the years of Henry III's reign. It is argued that the basis for the first two forgeries, the donations, were in fact authentic 11th-century documents, however, it is impossible to base conclusions regarding 11th-century Istria by solely relying on these 14th-century forgeries.
