Emperor Conrad II confirms the decisions of the Synod of Rome from 1027 regarding Aquileian jurisdiction over Grado, invests the patriarchs of Aquileia with the possession of “the parish of Grado”, and donates Venetian territories between the rivers Piave and Livenza to the Patriarchate of Aquileia.

Editor's Notes

Emperor Conrad II’s confirmation of the Synod of Rome that took place in April of 1027 (see it edited here), essentially confirming the decrees of the Synod of Mantua that took place exactly two hundred years earlier (see them edited here), both synods aiming to settle the conflict between the two patriarchates, Grado and Aquileia, over the metropolitan jurisdictions over Istrian bishoprics in the favor of the pro-imperial Church of Aquileia (see more on that conflict here). As in the 9th century, so too in the first half of the 11th century, these decrees proved impossible to implement and the conflict would last for another hundred years, the official resolution coming only in 1180 (doc. 1180_GA).
